1 Then Josiah acelebrated the Passover to the Lord in Jerusalem, and bthey slaughtered the Passover animals on the fourteenth day of the first month.
2 He set the priests in their offices and aencouraged them in the service of the house of the Lord.
3 He also said to athe Levites who taught all Israel and who were holy to the Lord, “Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel built; bit will be a burden on your shoulders no longer. Now serve the Lord your God and His people Israel.
4 “aPrepare yourselves by your fathers’ households in your divisions, according to the writing of David king of Israel and baccording to the writing of his son Solomon.
5 “Moreover, astand in the holy place according to the sections of the fathers’ households of your brethren the 1lay people, and according to the Levites, by division of a father’s household.
6 “Now aslaughter the Passover animals, bsanctify yourselves and prepare for your brethren to do according to the word of the Lord by Moses.”
7 Josiah contributed to the lay people, to all who were present, flocks of lambs and young goats, all for the Passover offerings, numbering 30,000 plus 3,000 bulls; these were from the king’s possessions.
8 His officers also contributed a freewill offering to the people, the priests and the Levites. Hilkiah and Zechariah and Jehiel, athe officials of the house of God, gave to the priests for the Passover offerings 2,600 from the flocks and 300 bulls.
9 aConaniah also, and Shemaiah and Nethanel, his brothers, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, the officers of the Levites, contributed to the Levites for the Passover offerings 5,000 from the flocks and 500 bulls.
10 So the service was prepared, and athe priests stood at their stations and the Levites by their divisions according to the king’s command.
11 1aThey slaughtered the Passover animals, and while bthe priests sprinkled 2the blood received from their hand, cthe Levites skinned them.
12 Then they removed the burnt offerings that they might give them to the sections of the fathers’ households of the lay people to present to the Lord, as it is written in the book of Moses. They did this also with the bulls.
13 So athey roasted the Passover animals on the fire according to the ordinance, and they boiled bthe holy things in pots, in kettles, in pans, and carried them speedily to all the lay people.
14 Afterwards they prepared for themselves and for the priests, because the priests, the sons of Aaron, were offering the burnt offerings and the fat until night; therefore the Levites prepared for themselves and for the priests, the sons of Aaron.
15 The singers, the sons of Asaph, were also at their stations aaccording to the command of David, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun the king’s seer; and bthe gatekeepers at each gate did not have to depart from their service, because the Levites their brethren prepared for them.
16 So all the service of the Lord was prepared on that day to celebrate the Passover, and to offer burnt offerings on the altar of the Lord according to the command of King Josiah.
17 Thus athe sons of Israel who were present celebrated the Passover at that time, and the Feast of Unleavened Bread seven days.
18 aThere had not been celebrated a Passover like it in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet; nor had any of the kings of Israel celebrated such a Passover as Josiah did with the priests, the Levites, all Judah and Israel who were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
19 In the eighteenth year of Josiah’s reign this Passover was celebrated.
20 aAfter all this, when Josiah had set the 1temple in order, Neco king of Egypt came up to make war at bCarchemish on the Euphrates, and Josiah went out to engage him.
21 But 1Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “aWhat have we to do with each other, O King of Judah? I am not coming against you today but against the house with which I am at war, and God has ordered me to hurry. Stop for your own sake from interfering with God who is with me, so that He will not destroy you.”
22 However, Josiah would not turn 1away from him, but adisguised himself in order to make war with him; nor did he listen to the words of Neco bfrom the mouth of God, but came to make war on the plain of cMegiddo.
23 The archers shot King Josiah, and the king said to his servants, “Take me away, for I am badly wounded.”
24 So his servants took him out of the chariot and carried him in the second chariot which he had, and brought him to Jerusalem 1where he died and was buried in the tombs of his fathers. aAll Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah.
25 Then aJeremiah chanted a lament for Josiah. And all the male and female singers speak about Josiah in their lamentations to this day. And they made them an ordinance in Israel; behold, they are also written in the Lamentations.
26 Now the rest of the acts of Josiah and his deeds of devotion as written in the law of the Lord,
27 and his acts, first to last, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah.
Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, then Jehoiachin Rule
1 aThen the people of the land took 1bJoahaz the son of Josiah, and made him king in place of his father in Jerusalem.
2 Joahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem.
3 Then the king of Egypt deposed him at Jerusalem, and imposed on the land a fine of one hundred talents of silver and one talent of gold.
4 The king of Egypt made Eliakim his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. But aNeco took Joahaz his brother and brought him to Egypt.
5 aJehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem; and he did evil in the sight of the Lord his God.
6 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up aagainst him and bbound him with bronze chains to take him to Babylon.
7 aNebuchadnezzar also brought some of the articles of the house of the Lord to Babylon and put them in his temple at Babylon.
8 aNow the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim and 1the abominations which he did, and what was found against him, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah. And Jehoiachin his son became king in his place.
9 aJehoiachin was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem, and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.
10 aAt the turn of the year King Nebuchadnezzar sent and brought him to Babylon with the valuable articles of the house of the Lord, and he made his kinsman bZedekiah king over Judah and Jerusalem.
11 aZedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem.
12 He did evil in the sight of the Lord his God; ahe did not humble himself bbefore Jeremiah the prophet 1who spoke for the Lord.
13 aHe also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar who had made him swear allegiance by God. But bhe stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the Lord God of Israel.
14 Furthermore, all the officials of the priests and the people were very unfaithful following all the abominations of the nations; and they defiled the house of the Lord which He had sanctified in Jerusalem.
15 The Lord, the God of their fathers, asent word to them again and again by His messengers, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place;
16 but they continually amocked the messengers of God, bdespised His words and scoffed at His prophets, cuntil the wrath of the Lord arose against His people, until there was no remedy.
17 aTherefore He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or infirm; He gave them all into his hand.
18 aAll the articles of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king and of his officers, he brought them all to Babylon.
19 Then athey burned the house of God and broke down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned all its fortified buildings with fire and destroyed all its valuable articles.
20 Those who had escaped from the sword he acarried away to Babylon; and bthey were servants to him and to his sons until the rule of the kingdom of Persia,
21 ato fulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, until bthe land had enjoyed its sabbaths. cAll the days of its desolation it kept sabbath 1duntil seventy years were complete.
22 aNow in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia—in order to fulfill the word of the Lord bby the mouth of Jeremiah—the Lord cstirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he sent a proclamation throughout his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying,
23 “Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, ‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and He has appointed me to build Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever there is among you of all His people, may the Lord his God be with him, and let him go up!’ ”
