42:17 When Joseph put them “all [together]” in jail for three days, he gave them ample opportunity to squabble over who would return to Canaan, leaving the others behind. The soul searching they underwent may well have been intensified by the three days of close quarters in the dungeon. There is no mention of anyone volunteering, as Judah did later (44:33). But the brothers will not be forced to make this decision after all (vv. 19, 24).
