In the promised land there were to be new circumstances of life and new conditions in which the nation would have need of further revelation from God. It was to be a time of transition from the extraordinary circumstances of the wilderness wanderings to the more settled conditions of Palestine, and in this more settled existence Israel needed once more to hear the voice of the living God. The work of the Levites was not sufficient for that time and so God is to give to Israel His prophets, who would
