For advancing this view and maintaining it in public discussions and debates, he was eventually put on trial for his life before the Sanhedrin. But when he saw that the case was going against him, he made no attempt to recant or to compromise. Obviously for him the Christian understanding of man’s way of approach to God inaugurated by Christ was such an essential part of the gospel that compromise here was impossible.
