To return to the example of Genesis 28:10–22 and Jacob’s “ladder,” this passage both develops the narrative of Jacob’s flight from Esau while at the same time containing elements of intentional foreshadowing of the Messiah. Readers of Scripture should not assume that everything in this passage intentionally foreshadows the Messiah.
