Old Testament Verb: חָטָא (ḥāṭāʾ), GK 2627 (S 2398), 240×. The verb ḥāṭāʾ carries the basic meanings of “to miss (the mark)” and by extension “to sin.” (1) The former meaning is best illustrated in Jdg. 20:16, “Among all these soldiers there were seven hundred chosen men who were left-handed, each of whom could sling a stone and not miss.” Furthermore, Prov. 19:2 warns of the consequence of acting in haste: “It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way.”
