At times the verb denotes a hospital or prison visit (Mt. 25:36, 43; Acts 7:23), but can also refer to serving widows (cf. serve [diakoneō]) and taking care of orphans (Jas. 1:27). Clearly, episkeptomai means more than just casually stopping by. Accordingly, the apostles choose men full of wisdom and the Spirit to do just that concerning the needy (Acts 6:3), and it was this verb that was the motive behind Paul’s second missionary journey (15:36).
