These studies review the setting and content of messianic hope in ancient Judaism and early Christianity. The earliest among them appeared in 1981, when their subject was receiving rather less notice in biblical scholarship than is now the case. To set the collection in context I have picked out some characteristic themes of subsequent study for notice in this introduction.
