Therefore God’s commandments are not there to spoil our enjoyment of life as men but, rather, to show us the way to a happy life. Now there is a serious objection to this view of morality as the doctrine of living happily. Is it not our experience that we must do many things that are quite opposed to our pursuit of happiness? Familial, marital, and professional duties often have little regard for our personal wishes.
