Eshnunna An ancient Assyrian city in central Mesopotamia founded sometime in the Jemdet Nasr period (3100–2900 bc). Eshnunna was located in the Diyala River Valley (also referred to as Eshnunna), situated between Assyria in the north, Babylon in the west, Larsa in the south, and Elam in the east. The site is at modern Tell Asmar, roughly 50 miles northeast of modern Baghdad.
Throughout the city’s history, its name varied. It was recorded at various points as Ṭupliaš, Abnunnak, Ašnunnak, and Ašnun (Jacobsen, Philological Notes, 1). Eshnunna was the most common designation prior to and into the Babylonian period.
