Zelophehad, Son of Hepher (צְלָפְחָד, tselophchad). A Manassite who died in the desert without sons (Num 26:33; 27:1, 7; 36:2, 6, 10–11; Josh 17:3; 1 Ch 7:15). His five daughters asked Moses to give them what would have been their father’s inheritance. Moses granted the request, and this set the precedent for women inheriting property.
The Gileadite chiefs asked Moses to require women who inherit property or wealth to marry within their own tribes (Num 36:6–9). This requirement—which prevents alienation of property—was a law among the Hebrews.
