Uriel (אוּרִיאֵל, uri'el). An archangel from pseudepigraphical texts whose name means either “fire of God” or “God is my light.”
In 2 Esdras, he instructs Ezra (2 Esdras 4:1; 5:20; 10:28). In 1 Enoch 20:2, Uriel is the angel who is “over the world and Tartarus”—he leads Enoch through the underworld and explains its secrets (see also 1 Enoch 19:1; 21:5–6; 27:2; 33:3–4; 72:1; 74:2; 75:3–4; 78:10; 80:1; 82:7). In the Life of Adam and Eve, when God commands Michael to bury the bodies of Adam and Abel in Paradise, Uriel accompanies him. In the lost Prayer of Joseph, Uriel is the angel who wrestles with Jacob and knows the secrets of heaven, but stands only eighth in rank. In the Sibylline Oracles he is entrusted with the judgment of the Titans (2:215–30).
