Trickster A literary character who uses cunning and deceit to turn the tables on an opponent. Tricksters frequently originate from an inferior status or social position. They succeed by using deceit and breaking the rules of expectation and convention.
The trickster motif appears in the writings of many ancient cultures, including Africa, Greece, Rome, and the Americas (Patterson, “Old Testament,” 385–87). Writers often employ the motif to entertain, using the inversion of status to comedic effect (Grottanelli, “Tricksters,” 120). The trickster theme appears frequently throughout the Old Testament.
