Threshing Floor (גֹּרֶן, goren;). A level outdoor area used for threshing sheaves of grain. Threshing floors were often located on the top of a rock or on a hilltop. Sheaves were laid out and either beaten with a flail or threshed by oxen dragging a heavy object over them (Isa 28:27). Together with the winepress, the threshing floor was of great value and central to harvest celebrations (Deut 15:14; 16:13; 2 Kgs 6:27; Hos 9:2; Deut 16:13–15). The threshing floor is the setting for a significant part of the Ruth story (Ruth 3:3–6, 14). Threshing commonly represents divine judgment (Isa 21:10; 27:12; Jer 51:33; Hos 13:3; Mic 4:12–13; Matt 3:12).
