Teman (תֵּימָן, teiman). A region and city in Edom (Jer 49:7, 20; Ezek 25:13; Amos 1:12; Obad 1:9; Hab 3:3). Teman, like many places in Edom, is associated with or named after descendants of Esau. Teman was the grandson of Esau and son of Eliphaz (Gen 36:11; 1 Chr 1:36). In Ezekiel 25:13, the reference to Teman in contrast to Dedan, an Arabian oasis southeast of Edom, may imply that Teman was located in northern Edom. Biblical writers sometimes used geographic opposites to refer to the entire region found between the two landmarks (e.g., “from Dan to Beersheba” for “all Israel” in 1 Sam 3:20). However, the location of Teman remains uncertain. It was evidently one of the more prominent cities of Edom, since biblical poets regularly used Teman metonymically to represent Edom in general (Jer 49:7, 20; Obad 1:9; Hab 3:3). In Amos 1:12, Teman is referenced in parallel with Bozrah, the capital city of Edom.
