Maskhuta, Tell El- An archaeological site located in northeastern Egypt, west of the Suez Canal; a candidate for the location of ancient Pithom (Exod 1:11) or Succoth (Num 33:5). Tell el-Maskhuta (Arabic) means “the Mound of the Statue.” The site appears to have been occupied first in the Middle Kingdom, reaching its height in the Persian and Roman periods, and closing its ancient occupational history in the early Islamic period.
