Spring Any place in which water comes up naturally from underground. Many Hebrew place names bear the prefix “En,” which means “spring.”
Springs held particular significance in the land of Palestine due to its limited amount of rainfall. Many villages in both eastern and western Palestine and Lebanon depended entirely upon reservoirs or cisterns of rainwater. Other towns were situated along the few existing perennial streams.
The image of a spring or fountain is used figuratively throughout the Bible to represent:
• God (Psa 36:9; Jer 2:13; 17:13)
• Wisdom (Prov 10:11; 13:14; 14:27; 16:22; 18:4)
• Spouses (Prov 5:18)
• Children (Deut 33:28; compare Psa 68:26; Prov 5:16)
• Prosperity (Psa 107:35; 114:8; Hos 13:15)
• The Fear of Yahweh (Prov 14:27)
