Simon the Benjaminite A temple administrator from the tribe of Benjamin (2 Macc 3:4–6). Simon is described as “captain,” “chief,” or “leader” (προστάτης, prostatēs) of the temple. In 2 Maccabees, Simon has a disagreement with Onias, the high priest of the Jerusalem temple, concerning how the city market was being handled. After failing to resolve the dispute, Simon goes to Apollonius, the governor of Coele-Syria and Phoenecia, and reports that the temple contains great sums of money that Apollonius could acquire.
