Shallum the Gatekeeper (שַׁלּוּם, shallum). The chief of the Levitical gatekeepers after the exile (1 Chr 9:17). He may be the same man as the Levitical gatekeeper named Shallum listed among the men of Judah who agreed to divorce their foreign wives at Ezra’s insistence (Ezra 10:24; compare 1 Esdras 5:28). Another gatekeeper named Meshullam is mentioned in Neh 12:25. All of these references to postexilic Levitical gatekeepers named Shallum or Meshullam could be referring to the same person. However, Shallum (or Meshelemiah) was also the family name for a group of Levitical gatekeepers established before the exile (Jer 35:4; 1 Chr 26:1–3). The name often appears in connection with the names of the other families of gatekeepers including Akkub and Talmon (see 1 Chr 9:17; Ezra 2:42; Neh 7:45; 12:25), making it difficult to determine whether the names refer to different people as representatives of their respective families. Some are likely indicating the same individual. The Korahite and Levitical gatekeeper named Shallum, son of Kore, mentioned in 1 Chr 9:19, was the leader of that family of gatekeepers (compare 1 Chr 26:1–3).
