Quail (שְׂלָו, selau). Small birds that Yahweh provided as food for the Israelites in the wilderness (Exod 16:13; Num 11:31–32). The first appearance of quail is depicted as a sign of divine provision for the Israelites (compare Psa 105:40); however, the second time the Israelites feed on quail, they are struck by a plague from God.
