Pharaoh Hophra (פַּרְעֹה חָפְרַע, par'oh chophra'). Also known as Apries. The fourth pharaoh of the Egyptian 26th dynasty. Reigned 589–570 bc. Named Ḥʿʿ-yb-Re in ancient Egyptian, from which his Hebrew name חָפְרַע (chophra') and usual Greek name Ἁπρίης (Hapriēs) are derived. In the Septuagint he is called by a different name, represented in Greek as Οὑαφρή (Houaphrē).

In the Old Testament, Hophra is mentioned by name in Jer 44:30; elsewhere in Jeremiah and Ezekiel he is simply called Pharaoh. When Hophra’s army approached Jerusalem, the army of the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar temporarily withdrew (Jer 37:5–11). Ezekiel and Jeremiah prophesied that Hophra would ultimately be defeated by Nebuchadnezzar (Jer 43:9–13; 46:13–26; Ezek 29:2–20; 30:21–35; 31:2–18). In 587/86, despite Hophra’s intervention, Nebuchadnezzar conquered Jerusalem and the exile of Judah in Babylon began.

In 570 bc Hophra was deposed by Amasis, who succeeded him as king. This is reported by an Egyptian inscription from the reign of Amasis as well as by the Greek historians Herodotus and Diodorus Siculus (Breasted, Ancient Records of Egypt, 4:509–12); Herodotus, Hist., 2.161–72; Diodorus Siculus, Hist., 1.68).
