Penuel (פְּנִיאֵל, peni'el). Also called Peniel. A place near the ford of the Jabbok River. Jacob named this location Penuel after wrestling with a mysterious divine figure there (Gen 32:32; Judg 8:8–9, 17; 1 Kgs 12:25). Jacob chose the name Penuel because it means “the face of God” (Gen 32:32; see also Hos 12:4). Penuel developed into a town, which is referenced in the story of Gideon in the book of Judges (Judg 8:8–9, 17). Later, Jeroboam rebuilt the city (1 Kgs 12:25).
