Papias (Παπίας, Papias). An early church father who was the Bishop in Hierapolis (Ecclesiastical History 3.36:1–2) in the first half of the second century. Associated with the Apostle John and a contemporary of Polycarp. Although never included in a canon list, his major work, Exposition of the Sayings of the Lord, serves as one of the major traditions describing early Gospel composition and fragments of it are included in some editions of the Apostolic Fathers.
