Ono (אוֹנוֹ, ono). A town of the tribe of Benjamin located in the northwest Shephelah; the name literally means “work.”
Ono’s establishment is accredited by the Chronicler to the “sons of Elpaal” (1 Chr 8:12), who also built Lod and surrounding towns. In a number of lists (Biblical, Egyptian, and Talmudic), Ono is found alongside Lod, with which it appears to have shared victories and losses throughout history. Ono was situated roughly 5 miles north of Lod and nearly 30 miles northwest of Jerusalem. The town shared its name with a nearby “plain of Ono” (1 Chr 8:12; Ezra 2:33; Neh 6:2), which is another name for the “valley of craftsmen” (Neh 11:35; Simons, Handbook, 390).
