Nabonidus (Akk. Nabu-na’id). The last king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire (556–539 bc). Nabonidus himself is not mentioned in the Bible; his son Belshazzar is portrayed in the book of Daniel (Dan 5) as the king when Babylon fell to Cyrus in 539 bc. Cuneiform documents attest that Belshazzar ruled with the title of coregent (that is, as acting king under his father).
