Carmel, Mount (הַר הַכַּרְמֶל, har hakkarmel; τὸ ὄρος τὸ Καρμήλιος, to oros to Karmēlios). Mountain range in northern Israel that forms a promontory into the Mediterranean. The site where Elijah called fire from heaven in a contest with the prophets of Baal (1 Kgs 18). Carmel means “garden” or “vineyard,” referring to the area’s fertile beauty.
