Mered, Son of Ezrah (מֶרֶד, mered). A son of Ezrah and a descendant of Judah. Mered appears to have had two wives: an Egyptian named Bithiah and an unnamed woman from the tribe of Judah (1 Chr 4:17–18). The Hebrew text of 1 Chr 4:17–18 gives the information about Mered’s family out of sequence. The first sentence of 1 Chr 4:17 lists the four sons of Ezrah, and the next sentence lists the children an unspecified woman bore to an unspecified son of Ezrah. The following sentence in 1 Chr 4:18 lists the sons that “his Judahite wife” bore (but the antecedent of “his” is unclear). The verse ends with the statement: “These were the sons of Bithiah daughter of Pharaoh, whom Mered married.” It appears likely that this last clause is displaced and should follow the initial list of Ezrah’s sons in 1 Chr 4:17. This sequence presents the information about Mered’s family in a more comprehensible way: “The sons of Ezrah: Jether, Mered, Epher, and Jalon. And these were the sons of Bithiah daughter of Pharaoh, whom Mered married: And she became pregnant with Miriam, Shammai, and Ishbah, the father of Eshtemoa. And his Judahite wife bore Jered the father of Gedor, Heber the father of Soco, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah.”
