Markan Hypothesis The hypothesis that Mark was the first Gospel written and was independently used as a source by Matthew and Luke. A foundational element of the Two- (or Four-) Source solution to the Synoptic Problem. Accepting the Markan Hypothesis allows for study of the redaction and therefore of the unique emphases of each of the Synoptic Gospels.
