Mari (Akkadian, Mar-ē). A city located on the east bank of the middle Euphrates River, on a trade route halfway between Emar and Babylon. Mari flourished during the time of the patriarchs. Although it is not mentioned in the Bible, texts from Mari give insight into several traditions and names found in the Pentateuch and practices of the prophets. The city was located in modern Syria, about 30 miles north of the Iraq border.
