Mamre the Campsite (מַמְרֵא, mamre'). A place near Hebron associated with Abraham. The name “Mamre” occurs 10 times in the Bible (all in Genesis: 13:18; 14:13, 24; 18:1; 23:17, 19; 25:9; 35:27; 49:30; 50:13). Two of these (Gen 14:13, 24) refer to a person—an ally of Abraham—and the rest refer to a site at or near the town of Hebron. In many cases, Mamre is associated with the burial site of the patriarchs (Gen 23:17, 19; 25:9; 49:30; 50:13). The cultic significance of the site during the early Roman period was such that it was one of three sanctuaries that Herod the Great rebuilt.
