Locust A swarming, leaping insect capable of causing great devastation to crops and other plant life (e.g., Deut 28:38; Isa 33:4; Joel 1:4). In the exodus story, locusts overrun Egypt during the eighth plague (Exod 10:4–6, 12–15; see also Psa 105:34).
Some texts mention locusts figuratively to describe an innumerable horde (e.g., Judg 6:5; Jer 46:23). In an apocalyptic vision, the book of Revelation depicts locust-like creatures swarming over the Earth, tormenting those who are not marked by the seal of God (Rev 9:3–10).
The Bible also refers to locusts being used as food—notably by John the Baptist (e.g., Lev 11:22; Matt 3:4).
