Jezebel, Wife of Ahab, Daughter of Ethbaal (אִיזֶבֶל, izevel). Baal-worshiper who kills prophets of the Lord, threatens Elijah, and orders the murder of Naboth (1 Kgs 16:31; 18:4; 19:2; 21:5–14). Jezebel is the wife of King Ahab of Israel (874–853 bc) and the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians. She is killed at the command of King Jehu, who is chosen by Yahweh to destroy the house of Ahab (2 Kgs 9:6–7; 30–33).
The narratives of 1–2 Kings portray Jezebel as a woman of great wickedness who persuades her husband and others to oppose Yahweh and commit evil deeds. Her legacy is preserved in 1 Kgs 21:25: “Truly, there was no one like Ahab who had sold himself by doing evil in the eyes of Yahweh, whose wife Jezebel urged him on.”
