Jephthah the Judge, Critical Issues Considers the time period, geopolitical setting, and moral characterization of Jephthah (יִפְתָח, yiphthach), who was called by the elders of Gilead to lead a battle against the Ammonites (Judg 11:4–11). Jephthah is a complex figure in Judges—he defeats the Ammonites and rules Gilead for six years, but he also offers his daughter to Yahweh as a burnt offering (Judg 11:29–40). In the historical context of the early Iron Age, Jephthah shows how a capable and charismatic commander can marshal the Israelites to victory over a hostile neighbor. In his literary context between the major judges Gideon and Samson, Jephthah’s story is the penultimate chapter in an increasingly tragic saga of apostate Israelite leaders.
