Jael (יָעֵל, ya'el). The wife of Heber the Kenite, known for killing Sisera (Judg 4:17–22; 5:2–31).
For 20 years, Jabin, the king of Canaan, had oppressed Israel, and Sisera was his general. The prophetess Deborah had stirred up the tribes of Israel to do battle against him, prophesying that Sisera would be delivered “into the hand of a woman” (Judg 4:9). The Israelites defeated him at “Taanach by the waters of Megiddo” (Judg 5:19), but Sisera ran away from the battle. He fled to the tent of Jael, because there was peace between Jabin and the family of Heber. She invited him to take shelter there, and she killed him as he slept (Judg 4:17–22). Having murdered him, she went forth to meet Barak the Israelite general and claimed the credit. Deborah then praises Jael for killing Sisera in this way (Judg 5:24).
