Jabin II (יָבִין, yavin). “King of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor” (Judg 4:2). Jabin oppressed Israel in the days preceding the victory of Deborah and Barak. His captain, Sisera is the more important figure in the story given in Judges. (Judg 4:7, 17–24; Psa 83:9–10). The phrase “until they destroyed Jabin king of Canaan” (Judg 4:24) is a standard expression usually referring to the destruction of a king’s army. Therefore, it is not certain that he was killed in the battle, or that he was even present at it. The relationship between the Jabin in Judg 4 and the Jabin in Josh 11 is unclear. It is possible that the events of Judg 4:1–24 occurred before the events of Josh 11:1–23, and that this Jabin was the same king of Hazor whom Joshua killed. Alternatively, the name simply may have been common among the rulers of Hazor.
