Horns of the Altar (קַרְנֹת הַמִּזְבֵּחַ, qarnoth hammizbeach). Projections at the four corners of the altar of burnt offering (Exod 27:2; 38:2; Ezek 43:15, 20) and the altar of incense (Exod 30:2; 37:25). These horns were of one piece with the altar and were overlaid with gold or bronze. Certain sacrificial rituals required the horns of the altar to be smeared with the blood of sacrificial animals (e.g., Lev 4:7, 25). Accused criminals seeking sanctuary could cling to the horns of the altar (1 Kgs 1:50–53). Amos prophesied that God would cut off the horns of the altar to punish Israel (Amos 3:14).
