Hobab, Son of Jethro (חֹבָב, chovav). A relative of Zipporah, Moses’ Midianite wife (Num 10:29; Judg 4:11).
Hobab is mentioned twice by name in Scripture. He was either the father-in-law or the brother-in-law of Moses. Numbers 10:29 states that Hobab was the son of Reuel the Midianite, who is called Moses’ father-in-law. However, in Judges 4:11, the Kenites are described as the descendants of Hobab, the “father-in-law of Moses.” It is not clear how this statement connects with Num 10:29.
Judges 1:16 states that the Kenites—the descendants of Moses’ father-in-law—settled with the people of Judah. This supports the account given in Num 10:29, in which Moses invites Hobab to accompany the Israelites through the desert. The Kenites were among the Israelites later—this story explains how they came to join them.
