Head of the Church A phrase Paul uses in Ephesians and Colossians to describe Christ’s relationship with the Church (κεφαλὴ τῆς ἐκκλησίας, kephalē tēs ekklēsias; [Eph 5:23]; “head of the body of the church,” ἡ κεφαλὴ τοῦ σώματος τῆς ἐκκλησίας, hē kephalē tou sōmatos tēs ekklēsias; [Col 1:18]). The concept might also be used to describe the relationship of church leaders with others in the Church (1 Cor 12:21).
