Hagrites (הַגְרִי, hagriy). A seminomadic Transjordanian tribe residing east of Gilead (1 Chr 5:19, 1 Chr 27:30, 1 Chr 5:20, 1 Chr 5:10, Psa 83:6). Because Samuel and Kings do not mention the Hagrites, this reference may be anachronistic and reflect the name of a tribe living in the same region in the post-exilic period. The hypothesis that the Hagrites are descendants of Hagar and the Ishmaelites is unlikely. Connecting the group to the Arabian tribe of the Agraioi mentioned by Graeco-Roman geographers is more plausible but still uncertain (see Strabo, Geography 16.4.2; Ptolemy, Geography 5.19.2).
