Gospel of Matthias A noncanonical, lost gospel known only through its condemnation as heretical by early church fathers such as Origen and Eusebius (Homilies on Luke 1.2; Ecclesiastical History 3.25.6). The Gospel of Matthias was never widely authoritative in the early church period and is listed as “apocryphal” (meaning “not accepted”) in the sixth-century Gelasian Decree
The relationship of the Gospel of Matthias to the Traditions of Matthias is unclear. Puech, for example, considers Traditions of Matthias to be a separate document, since Clement of Alexandria explicitly uses the word “traditions” to describe a book associated with Matthias in Stromata 2.9 (Puech, “The Gospel,” 308–9). However, Edwards believes they are the same (Edwards, Hebrew Gospel, 22).
