Eduth (עֵדוּת, eduth). A Hebrew word usually translated “covenant” or “testimony” and used in the Old Testament for writings such as the Ten Commandments (Exod 31:18), the covenant (2 Kgs 11:12; Ps 132:12), and the records of the tabernacle (Ex 25:16). Eduth is also used for the tabernacle itself (Num 17:7–8; 18:2; 2 Chr 24:6) and for the general wisdom and teaching of God (Ps 19:7; 78:5).
Eduth is used in its transliterated form only in the titles of two Psalms (Ps 60; 80), where its meaning is more obscure. In both cases it is apparently modifying the Hebrew noun for “lily,” which is plural in Psalm 80 (Shoshannim Eduth) and singular in Psalm 60 (Shushan Eduth). In these titles, the phrase “lily of the covenant” or “lilies of the covenant” may carry a liturgical function, designate the melody, or refer to a musical instrument.
