Cave of Treasures A noncanonical Syriac text which claims to offer a history of the world from creation to the time of Christ. Its genre can be classified as rewritten Bible; it is also sometimes included among the Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, as a noncanonical ancient text about Old Testament events and figures. This work was never widely authoritative in the early church period. The extant form of the text was probably not composed until the 6th century or early 7th century, but manuscripts of the text attribute it to the 4th century Ephrem the Syrian (Toepel, “Cave of Treasures,” 535–37). In addition to two Syriac versions of the text, translations into Arabic and Georgian survive, as well as fragments in Coptic. Its content was also reworked as part of the Arabic Apocalypse of Peter, which in turn served as a source for the first part of the Ethiopian Book of Clement, one of the books of the broader New Testament canon of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church (Toepel, “Cave of Treasures,” 532–34; Bausi, Il Qalēmenṭos, 18).
