Bethulia (Βαιτυλουα, Baityloua). The city most central to the Book of Judith (Judith 4:6). According to the book of Judith, the city is north of Jerusalem (11:19), near Betomasthaim (4:6), in the hill country of Samaria (6:11); there is a spring below the city (7:12–13) and access to Jerusalem via a narrow mountain pass (10:10–11). Despite these details, scholars are uncertain whether the city was known to the author, or if the city was entirely fictional. It has also been identified with Jerusalem, Sanur, and Bethel.
