Balance (מֹאזְנַיִם, moznayim). A type of scale commonly used to measure currency and commodities in the ancient world. It was composed of a horizontal bar with a plate at each end—one to hold the object to be weighed, the other to hold a counterweight. In the Bible, Yahweh calls for the people of Israel to use honest balances (Lev 19:36), and the imagery of a balance is used to symbolize justice and fair dealing (Job 31:6; Psa 62:9; Prov 11:1; 16:11). Several prophetic texts refer to the dishonest practice of buying by heavier weights and selling by lighter weights (e.g., Hos 12:7; Mic 6:11). One of the horsemen in the book of Revelation is holding a balance (Rev 6:5).
