Baasha, King of Israel (בַּעְשָׁא, ba'sha'). A king of Israel who killed Nadab, the son of Jeroboam, and ruled in his place (ca. 900–877 bc) (1 Kgs 15:16–16:7); later he exterminated the house of Jeroboam in fulfillment of prophecy (1 Kgs 14:14).
Baasha was often at war with Asa, the king of Judah (compare Jer 41:9). He began to build Ramah, but Asa bribed Ben-hadad, king of Syria, to attack him. Baasha then withdrew from Ramah in the south to defend himself against Ben-hadad in the north. Meanwhile, Asa attacked and captured Ramah, along with Geba and Mizpah further north.
The prophet Jehu told Baasha that because of his sins, his house would become like that of Jeroboam. Zimri murdered Baasha’s son Elah, along with the rest of his family (1 Kgs 15:16; 16:1; 2 Chr 16:1). The fate of Baasha’s house is used as a curse in 1 Kgs 21:22 and 2 Kgs 9:9.
