Baal-Peor (בַּעַל פְּעוֹר, ba'al pe'or). Also called Baal of Peor. A local representation of the Canaanite god Baal that is associated with Mount Peor in the land of Moab (Num 23:28; 25:3; Deut 4:3). Later passages harshly condemn the Israelites’ idolatrous worship of the Baal of Peor and use the incident to highlight their tendency to stray from Yahweh (Num 31:16; Josh 22:17; Psa 106:28; Hos 9:10).
