Asp (פֶּתֶן, pethen; ἀσπίς, aspis). Any poisonous snake; sometimes translated as “adder” (Pss 58:4; 91:13). The asp may be the Egyptian cobra, but could be any of the more common poisonous snakes in southern Palestine. The poison of the asp characterizes enemy nations (Deut 32:33) and the wicked (Job 20:14, 16; Rom 3:13). The child who plays over the hole of the asp represents the nature of the Messianic kingdom (Isa 11:8).
