Asmodeus (אַשׁמְדַי, ashmday; Ἀσμοδαι̂ος, Asmodaios). A demon responsible for killing seven husbands of Sarah, daughter of Raguel. The demon killed the men on their wedding night before the marriage could be consummated (Tobit 3:7–9). Tobias, son of Tobit, eventually marries Sarah and succeeds in driving away Asmodeus using the smell of burning fish heart and liver (Tobit 6:17–18; 8:1–3). The angel Raphael then captures and binds the demon (Tobit 8:3).
