Apocryphon of David A title tentatively given to the Hebrew nonbiblical fragment labeled 2Q22, which was found among the Dead Sea Scrolls (ca. 250 bc–ad 50). The contents of 4Q373, which are often grouped under the label Apocryphon of Joseph, seem to be a copy of 2Q22 Column 1, with the extant 4Q373 including more content (VanderKam and Flint, Meaning, 228; Wise, “Stories,” 331; Garcı́a Martı́nez and Tigchelaar, Dead Sea Scrolls, 217). This work may be classified as parabiblical or rewritten Bible; it may also be classified as previously unknown pseudepigrapha.
4Q372 Fragment 2, which is also often grouped under the label Apocryphon of Joseph, seems to be related to 4Q373. This creates a possible connection between 4Q372 Fragment 2 (sometimes called 4Q372 Fragment 19) and 2Q22.
2Q22 itself contains very little content, with Column 1 mentioning military instruments and Yahweh and with Column 2 emphasizing God’s kindness, character, and judgment. 2Q22’s connection to 4Q373 is what provides the primary support for it being tentatively labeled Apocryphon of David; however, neither 2Q22 or 4Q373 actually mention David or Goliath. It is other parallels to the David and Goliath account in 4Q373 and 4Q372 Fragment 2 that create this proposed connection. For further details, see this article: Apocryphon of Joseph.
