Ancient Near East Modern name for the region in the ancient world in which most of the events of the Old Testament are set. Its approximate range includes the lands from Egypt and Anatolia in the west to Parthia and Persia in the east and from Anatolia, Urartu, and Parthia in the north to Arabia in the south. Importantly, it includes the Levant (including Israel, Canaan, Philistia, and Phoenicia) and Mesopotamia (including Assyria and Babylon). It is generally used only of the period from about the fourth millennium bc to the fourth century bc.
